Pekin Ducks are the most common breed of duck in North America. Originating in China, they were introduced into the United States in the 1870's. They are the chief breed of duck used for commercial meat production because of their extraordinarily fast rate of growth and excellent feed conversion. They are ready for processing at 6 to 8 weeks of age. Pekins are a very hardy and docile breed that are enjoyable to raise.

Ducks have a tendency to dehydrate during shipping. We recommend the following upon arrival: (1)Provide an abundance of fresh sugar water in shallow water founts, with the water no more than 1/2 inch deep. (2)After about 10-15 minutes, when all the ducklings have had an opportunity to drink, remove all of the water. (3)After 10-15 minutes, without water, return the water and repeat this process 1 or 2 more times and do not let them ever run out of water. Our experience has shown that this process reduces the incidence of water logging, which is the main cause of early duckling mortality.
